COMING OUT
Coming out means different things to different people, but coming out allows you to be true to your self and others. Coming out means also identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.
OYP through its Thursday night rap session and other group gatherings actively supports the coming out of the Youth, the Center office has resources to aid youth in the coming out process. Along with this we have asked some of the youth to write there experiences with coming out to use as part of that resource. The coming out story is published in the center newsletter as well as here on the website. Stories remain anonymous unless otherwise requested.
SOME BASIC THOUGHTS BEFORE COMING OUT!
Remember once you are out there really is no turning back so be sure you are ready.
Consider your friends and try coming out to the best one/s first to see what their reaction may be.
Based on your friends reactions you may want to think about who you will come out to next.
Consider how your family will react, you really don't want to create an uncomfortable living situation if you are to young to move out or just not ready yet.
Try coming out to a family member who you trust or if you have a GLBT family member, check with them concerning the families reaction to their coming out.
You can test the waters with your family by mentioning an article in the local news concerning something Gay or Lesbian to see how they react.
